Hillsborough Families call for safe standing at Anfield

Family members of some of the victims of the Hillsborough disaster have called for the introduction of safe standing at Anfield.

The 1989 tragedy cost 96 people their lives and heralded the introduction of all-seater legislation in the UK, but families of the victims don't believe it was standing that killed their loved ones.

Louise Brookes lost her brother at Hillsborough but believes the debate about standing is a red herring.

"I feel very strongly about bringing rail seating [safe standing] in. I don’t believe for a moment that standing killed our 96," Ms Brookes told the Mail.

"If it did, then why don't people die each year at Glastonbury or other festivals? People are standing, singing and dancing and sometimes with other people on their shoulders. Also spectators stand at rugby matches, so what is the difference?

"People should be free to choose whether they stand or sit and I would like an area of the stadium where they can stand, if they so choose to. All embraced the spirit of the discussion."

Ms Brookes' comments came after Liverpool FC agreed to consult with families of the victims regarding the issue of standing at Anfield.

Tony Barrett, Liverpool’s head of club and fan liaison, said: “We note the recent discussions about rail seating and would like to place on record our thanks to fans who have waited until a suitable juncture in the ongoing Hillsborough proceedings before entering into a debate.

Seen this over on Reddit. Would love to see safe standing at Anfield. It has worked in Germany and also Celtic have it.

HFSG (Hillsborough family support group) is still officially against safe standing, and only a few families have shown support, understandably.

Rail seating: Liverpool supporters vote in favour in fans' group online poll

Liverpool supporters have voted in favour of rail seating, in an online poll run by a leading fans' group.

Spirit of Shankly had an "emotive and sensitive" debate on the issue before holding an open vote, and 88% of the 17,910 people who voted were in favour.

There were 5% against, while the rest were undecided or wanted to know more.

Liverpool have said their supporters' position on the issue is "uniquely complex" because of the Hillsborough disaster, which claimed 96 lives.

The requirement for all-seater stadiums in England's top flight was a response to the tragedy and government legislation would need to change for standing areas to be introduced.

Liverpool said they would "listen" to fans' views if the regulations were ever changed.

The Premier League wrote to its 20 clubs last month to assess whether they would be interested in staging trials.

Rail seating, similar to the system at the ground of Scottish champions Celtic, is a safe-standing area featuring retractable seats.

'It's an incredible turnout'

Spirit of Shankly (SOS) said the result of the vote was a "significant step given the sensitivities of the topic" in the city.
